From Raw Timber to Wabash Avenue: A Custom Walnut Epoxy Dining Table Finds Its Home in Historic Vincennes, Indiana

There is something deeply poetic about bringing a custom-crafted piece of furniture into a home nestled in a historic town. Recently, we had the absolute privilege of designing and building a statement piece for Alden Luchtefeld, right on Wabash Avenue in the heart of Vincennes, Indiana.

Vincennes is Indiana's oldest city, rich with heritage, classic American architecture, and stories that span centuries. When Alden reached out to us to design a custom epoxy dining table that would serve as the central gathering place for family and friends, we knew the piece had to honor that sense of timeless permanence while bringing a bold, modern edge to the dining space.

Here is the journey of how we turned raw, rugged black walnut slabs into a polished, breathtaking centerpiece worthy of a beautiful Vincennes home.

The Design Vision: Bold Contrast & Architectural Lines

Alden's goal was clear: a large, striking statement dining table designed to comfortably seat eight guests (40"W x 84"L). It needed to handle everyday family life while doubling as an elegant backdrop for holiday dinners and celebrations.

Working closely together, we locked in a highly customized blueprint:

The Wood: Premium black walnut with tight, swirling grains and rich, contrasting sapwood.

The Pour: An opaque, deep black epoxy resin applied in a double-layer technique — a solid black base layer topped with a crystal-clear flood coat — to mimic a midnight river cutting through natural terrain.

The Profile: A sleek rectangle with a unique geometric edge profile, combining a straight edge with a beveled edge for a modern, architectural silhouette underneath.

The Finish: Perfectly sharp corners paired with an ultra-smooth, velvety surface where wood and epoxy feel completely seamless to the touch.

Stage 1: The Raw Materials (Slab Selection)

Every great table starts on the workshop floor with raw timber. For Alden's project, we sourced two massive live-edge black walnut slabs boasting incredible character and deep, swirling crotch figure grains.

Before any resin was poured, we meticulously mapped out the alignment, framing the slabs to create a dramatic, organic river running down the center. The raw beauty of the timber — complete with natural cracks and sweeping edges — provided the perfect canvas for our black epoxy fill.

Stage 2: Craftsmanship & Precision Engineering

Once the layout was approved, the technical craftsmanship began. Our artisans sealed the walnut slabs and prepared the mold for the double-layer epoxy process. The deep black resin seamlessly locked the two wood slabs together, transforming natural voids into structural art.

After the curing process, the tabletop underwent intensive flattening, followed by precision cutting to establish the clean rectangular geometry. The edge profile was custom-beveled according to specifications, ensuring that while the top features clean, sharp, commanding corners, the underside features a beautiful, tapered angle that catches the light elegantly.

Stage 3: The Finished Masterpiece

Before leaving our shop, we captured the table in its completed state. Supported by sleek, minimalist clear acrylic legs for the showroom test, the true depth of the grain emerged under our signature smooth finish. The deep chocolate tones of the walnut contrasted sharply with the jet-black resin river, highlighting the natural blonde sapwood borders in a way that feels both organic and thoroughly luxurious.

Stage 4: Home on Wabash Avenue (Client Feedback!)

Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a custom piece finally integrated into its intended space. Alden was kind enough to send over photos of the epoxy table settled into its new dining room on Wabash Avenue in Vincennes.

As Alden put it: "This table has completely transformed the room. Every time we sit down for a meal, I notice something new in the grain — it's like having a piece of art that we get to live with every day."

Whether decorated with seasonal centerpieces or surrounded by family sharing a meal, this 40" x 84" masterpiece brings a flawless balance of rustic Indiana warmth and clean, contemporary sophistication to the home.
